Biographie
Cornelia Tipuamantumirri est née près de l’actuel débarcadère des barges à Pirlangimipi, vers 1930. Lorsqu’elle était une jeune femme, elle aidait les jeunes tisserands à acquérir des compétences et des connaissances dans cette forme d’art. Elle leur enseignait également la danse traditionnelle Tiwi.
Cornelia Tipuamantumirri a épousé Steven Tipuamantamirri dans sa jeunesse et a eu un enfant, une fille, Dolores Tipuamantamirri. Cornelia Tipuamantumirri a également contribué à l’éducation d’un jeune garçon de Peppimenarti, Harry Wilson, qui faisait partie de la génération volée envoyée à Pirlangimpi et qui a ensuite épousé la célèbre artiste de Pepperminadi Regina Wilson.
Cornelia Tipuamantumirri utilise le kayimwagakimi pour son travail, plongeant le bois de fer sculpté en forme de peigne dans sa palette d’ocre, des nuances de roses et de jaunes pour dépeindre les reflets de sa longue vie sur les îles Tiwi. Des reflets aussi, des lumières du ciel à la surface de la mer d’Arafura.
